On the original machine yes.
I've got system restore disks which won't even work for the machine
they came with because I've changed HD so I don't know what you're
complaining about...

Sigh!
Yeah, you are right.
Does that mean when I buy a new pc I do not get all of the running system?
If I have to format will the disks that I have be sufficient?
Respects to Slumpy

Normally you get a n other install disk (or should that be disks) with
your new machine (probably XP nowadays).

I got 2 Master disks + one recovery on floppy.
Slumpy, if I format will this be enough?

No, all credit goes to those I read and learn from. Everything I do is
secondhand, and really belongs to Mike, Mara, Trout, Why?, Brian H, Boomer
and too many others to get into listing here.

I have been told that some XP machines come with the installation programs
on a small partition, so you don't need the disc, and making it uncopyable

Credit also goes to you.
I have read the above a lot, never guessed that Boomer is a lady.
What about if I format, will I be okay with the disks that I have.
I suppose that is a silly question, just getting a bit nervous that's all.

When I used my Tiny (achachach) recovery discs on my old machine I still had
to install Windows from a separate disc :-(

Machines like Packard Bell that come with proprietary versions of Windows
will use the identity of the cdrom drive to make sure it is being installed
on the right machine, sometimes there will be a reference to Oak
Technologies identifying the drive as was the case with an NEC I had that
had a restore disk but for some strange reason even though it gave the
error
message it might continue to with the install on another machine.

You can do it, but you will have to make a custom autoexec file to do it.
If you are running from a cd you will have to use a floppy disk to start the
computer and point it to the setup.exe on the cd or autorun.exe to install
it.

Thanks.
When the time comes I will go for that.
5 years & no format.
Have to respect Packard Bell for that I suppose.

For that Packard-Bell? Yes. For anything else? No.
BTW - It actually IS the "full Win98" system, it's just locked to
(typically!) the BIOS copyright.
Hence the "Recovery / Restore Disk" nomenclature.

And what part is "it actually IS the 'Full Win98' system, it's just
locked to the BIOS" don't you understand?
There's a reason why they paid $15 to $25, and the retail was right
at $150 for a full copy of Win98SE.

Most HDs are that good, yes. But you COULD reload that PB no
problem with the recovery disks.
So, what's the problem?
