Attention: All new and returning students
We ask that prior to arriving on campus, you do your best to
update your Windows XP or 2000 computer to protect it from the
Blaster Worm that is rapidly spreading throughout the Internet.
It is a three-step activity. The first two steps should be done
PRIOR to connecting your computer to ResNet or to your off-
campus Internet Service Provider. The last step you should do
now, or if you are an on-campus student, you should do after
registering for ResNet.
Actvities:
1. Patch your machine to prevent future attacks of this worm.
2. Repair any damage done by the worm.
3. Update your anti-virus software to assure you aren't infected
by the SoBig virus that is rapidly spreading.
Detailed Instructions and Web sites:
Step 1. Go to the Microsoft Web site for the latest patch which
protects your machine from this attack.
Windows XP clients should use this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyID=2354406c-c5b6-44ac-9532-3de40f69c074&displaylang=en
Windows 2000 clients should use this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyID=c8b8a846-f541-4c15-8c9f-220354449117&displaylang=en
Step 2. Go to the following link to get the utilty that will
repair any damage caused by the worm.
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blast
er.worm.removal.tool.html
and download the FIXBLAST.exe file from
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixBlast.exe
If you are unable to do this prior to returning to campus,
before you connect your computer to ResNet you MUST go to your
RA or the Main Desk in your residence hall for the CD that will
protect your computer. Once the fix has been applied, you may
safely connect to ResNet and register your computer. At that
time, you will also be able to download McAfee anti-virus to
insure you are not infected by the SoBig virus and others that
are prevalent at this time.
These steps should also be used to protect machines that will be
used off-campus or from your home.
