I am working on a video and we wanted a shot where a woman walks on the water of a pool and a guy rises out of the water to meet her but he is not wet. So we were thinking of building a plexi-glass platform for her and him to stand on. The part where he is rising out of the water we were thinking of shooting highangle looking down with him standing on a bluescreen...moving the camera down to simulate him moving. Then shooting the water element in the pool with a guy dressed in green to create the motion in the water. Is there a better way to do this that anyone can think of?

How about sinking him in the water and playing the scene backwards?

Nice obs Greg,

Greg is, of course correct about the ripples.

However, if you have the budget (and the time) to accomplish the things you mentioned above, I would suggest eliminating the green-screen stand-in model and doing cg ripples with psunami or the like. This will give you more flexibility later, and will save you the trouble of having to paint in the areas around your real model which don't quite match the stand-in. Also, the green-screen stand-in will be reflected in the ripples around the body of your superimposed model, and those little artifacts will be tough to remove.

Something just occured to me, as a solution to the obvious problem with Dale's suggestion:

Have the platform set up to lower your model into the water, wait for a couple seconds, and then raise him back up again.

Then, reverse the sinking footage and overlay it on the rising footage. Your model will be in exactly the same position (provided he held his position underwater) the only difference will be that he is not wet. Then, you could roto in your dry model over your wet one, and leave your wet model ripples (which will be going forwards, while reflecting the actual model, yadda yadda yadda....)

Best,
Ari

I would throw in a possible glitch to the aforementioned solution, and that's the issue of boyency, so the model would have to be secured to the platform somehow, and probably have something stiff running up his back so he does not flop around in the current. But otherwis I think this is a great idea.
