A gray/white checkerboard pattern suddenly appeared on pages 6-7 (of 12) in the pages pane. What did I do?

You used transparency in some fashion.

But the icons stay checkerboarded even if I drag everything off the pages and save it that way and then reopen it. That puzzles me.

Off the pages to where? The pasteboard is part of the page as far as this warning goes.

In addition, if you use transparency only on one side of a spread, both pages will show the checkerboard.

If you're not sure which item is the one with the transparency in it (or applied to it), try copying the whole lot to a new docment and then delete them one by one.

There are some classes of imported graphic that *might* contain transparency, so InDesign will assume that they do even when they don't.

I know which item is causing the checkerboard but I didn't realize that the pasteboard was considered part of the page. Hence, I couldn't understand why taking all the items off the page didn't change anything.

Now I know. Thanks all.
