When in doubt Trash the Prefs... that seems to be the common answer round here, but I would wait a moment for someone with font knowledge who might have a more elegant solution.

While I have you on the phone, so to speak, can you tell me why one size font will appear to be different sizes in different files when all files are at 100% view on my screen? Does it have something to do with the resolution

Yes. The same font size will appear different on screen between say a 72 ppi file and a 300 ppi file. It's an illusion actually. The font size is the same, it's the density of the placement of the image's pixels that have changed. If you raise the ppi, the type will appear larger.
