There is a rat here; this is obviously not a legitimate message from whom it is supposed to be.

Note the the e-mail address is in Australia, but the trace appears to come from Berlin, Germany. Note also the different ISP identifiers in the headers.

I'll leave it to someone else to sort out the posting IP, ISP's and traces, etc. (it's not too difficult to do, just takes some time. See http://samspade.org if you need some help.) This message is a scam, and apparently an attempt to confuse readers and embarass some third party.
Don't fall for it.

The poster should be identified and reported for abuse to his ISP's. If his ISP's are not interested in stopping this, they should be blacklisted.
It takes some work to do this. Please keep in mind the levels of possible exposure that each of us has with respect to scams like this,
while we are using the internet.

Needless to say, this has no place on a public network, and no relationship at all to most or all of the NG's to which it has been posted (9 of them). Crossposting to 9 NG's is also considered SPAM by most ISP's.

No, the remailers almost never know the origin of messages. Most automated uses of remailers use _chains_, with encryption at each stage. The traffic is unreadable except, maybe, at the exit stage. The origin is of course then shielded by chains of remailers.

Second, most remailers neither look at traffic nor retain logs. Most have scripts to automatically flush logs.

In the U.S., ISPs and relay nodes are explicitly protected from liability for what passes through their nodes (Congress specifically wrote this into a law a few years ago).

As for MIT being embarassed, this is silly. Far worse things than some schoolyard insults have flowed through their systems.
