Basically the .com domains are much more aggressively priced because of thats where the most aggressive competition happens.

Another reason might be in the fact that YOU NEED TO BE a commercial entity (registered business) to acquire a .com.au domain (at least AFAIK). Checks cost.

Sure, but thats a relatively minor factor. The main effect is the competition.

And the evidence for that is the cost of say .net.au or .org.au compared with .com

Thats more a consequence of the very low prices that they can get away with charging for a .com domain because of the competition.

Absolutely classic example of what can happen with a price war when the cost to the operation flogging the product is zero.
