It is the same as A05 or 105, going by the tip Sir Pudgie I have even flash
the firmware
to Pioneer v1.30 (the cracked version), it burns some 1x shintaros in 2x and
works just
as well as a Pioneer a05.

Who are you and do you have a webshop? I see dilithium has the following
notice:
Until further notice, with the exception of orders for AL3 chassis, we will
no longer be processing retail customer pre-paid orders. Only orders with
account customers (you know who you are, ie: CM(MM), ABRI, MRob, ST.J,
STMMSPWD) will be processed. We are not closing, all warranties for everyone
and everything is valid, we are simply focussing on some of our major
corporate clients rather than general retail sales which do not provide
return on investment.. Prices may be updated for reference, however orders
directly via this web site will not be processed until further notice. If
you have a specific requirement, and don't mind waiting for order
processing, email us. We are still here, but this site is reducing in
functionality.
So you still sell?

What's OEM?

Basically, if you bought a Retail DVD-R drive it'd come with a nice box,
software and (often) a nice instruction manual. An OEM DVD-R drive
would come in a plain cardboard box, probably no software and maybe a
leaflet explaining installation of the drive.
OEM stuff is cheaper and if you know what you're doing then you may as
well get that.

Original Equipment Manufacturer. Usually refers to anything that doesn't come in a retail box with
all software and accessories.
yes it is www.dilithium.com.au, but as you read I'm not really doing retail
sales anymore.
Case in point: You order the drive, I am at the mercy of my supplier for
delivery. You get sick of witing, or find someone else selling for $1 less
and suddenly cancel the order while the goods are in transit or even
dispatched COD.. I'm left with a drive I didn't want, possible COD fees,
freight in/return costs and a lot of wasted time.
In the end its just not worth the hassel selling small items retail while
trying to raise a 2yr old.
Instead I'm wholesaling to one of Australia's largest retail merchants for
their parts centres (they know what they want and order small to large qtys)
and supplying and servicing a few schools and other small clients.
If your serious about a drive, contact me direct by email, but be quick as
stocks will be limited to start with. Payment would be prepaid via EFT to
the company's account.
Cheers

Correct; just the pamphlets, a couple of blanks (one RW) and a few
shovelware discs IIRC! ;-)
The reason why there is a good market for OEM packages is because OEM are
basically bare drives with no additional software, some people may already
have
the supplied software from the retail package or have better softare than
the
retail pack, so there is no need for them to spend the additional money for
inferior
software or software they already have. I saw the new Pioneer 106 DVD+/-
writer
today at swap meet, the retail package is $460 and OEM bare drive is $430.
For
the extra $30 the software provided and free blanks are well worth it,( that
is only
my opinion). The Sony is available at $540.

Some ppl might agree, not me though! ;-)
I bought a retail pack, because that was all that was available when I
purchased my drive, had I been able to go OEM and save $$$ on software I've
never used I would have jumped at it, and I'd have gladly anted up for a
couple of blanks instead! :-)
For someone like you who bought retail pack for a05, it would not be
worth it to spend the extra $30 on the retail pack, I would probably
get OEM if I am to buy a06.

For sure! If I were buying now, there's no way I'd go retail - it'd be OEM
all the way for me. ;-)
As I said, at the time I bought my drive, there were no OEM drives available
anywhere, all I could get from any supplier was the retail pack! I can tell
you - this tightarse wasn't very happy about that! :-(

actually the OEM A06 does come with a CD of software.
Nero Express, VideoStudio, DVD MovieFactory, DVD PictureShow and a DVD Player.
$30 is $30, why spend it on a coloured box and $8 of media?

Where do you get a Pioneer 4X DVD-R disk and a Pioneer 2X DVD-RW disk for
$8?

For one, Pioneer don't manufacture media any longer, get them while stocks last...
Second: My listed buy price for Pioneer 4x media is $6.00 , 2x RW is $10.30
but Verbatim (which Pioneer themselves now recommend as preferred media)
4x -R $4.40
2x -RW $5
$9.40
Then there is shintaro:
4x -R $2.20
they don't make a 2x -RW ATM
Split the diff, sure $8 low but not much and was off the top of my head. At MOST the media is
$16.30 to me. The same price difference to me for OEM vs Retail is $33. ($383 vs $416).
Still not worth it...
oem from $455 plus postage as listed at razorprices...

Damn the news server I'm on. It keeps throwing these damn old threads at me
as if they're new ones. :)
I actually got an extremely old thread the other day from late last year
that came up as unread. I don't normally take any real notice of the date
the thread started or the last post date.
My bad. :)
I paid 329 for mine

Its a price search site with about 6 retailers on it so its not the place to
be looking for cheap gear.

They do, think retailers ask to be on it, not many are on it so it wouldnt

Seems quite popular to me; most retailers aren't proactive which is why
they're not there. No idea why not, it's free advertising if their
prices are competitive.

Maybe because they have to pay them money to be listed.
Its not a site I've ever heard of before the person posted it.
And looking at the expensive prices its not a site I'll be going back
to any time soon.
I go to best bits in wa which has every retailer listed along with all
the prices on most things. Not seen any site as good as the best bits
site.

Umm, no, it's FREE.
http://www.razorprices.com/index.php?view=retailers&action=join
It costs money to ADVERTISE on the site, but being a listed price
crawling site is FREE, costs nothing, nix, zero...

do.

I had trouble finding the site through Google, also. I find that
sometimes you just aren't typing in the right combination... ;)

Also search on 106, which is the oem version, or just use the link I posted
which is an 06 search in DVD section...
The shops listed do not pay anything, but they have to apply for approval to
be listed, and have an online price list somewhere with their items listed
in a certain format. eg something like an excel file with product, price,
description etc to match RazorPrices requirements for automatic updating
each day...
The kick back to Razor is that they can charge for banner ads...

ask if it comes with a pioneer serial number.
if not then its a imported drive which means if you contact pioneer
they won't help you. cheaper to buy frim the us for about $220 aus
after freight than buy it from a importer.

Bear in mind that most if not all of these Pioneer A06
drives at price points around AUD$300.00 are not official
Pioneer imports, and Pioneer Australia will not offer
any form of support for them.
AFAIK, they're being imported by grey market specialists
NASA.com.au (A little company in North Ryde, Sydney
(formerly near Central Station in the City)) who have been
grey importing a lot of stuff, Kodak digicams, Ricoh,
TDK, etc burners, Laser CD and DVD media, and assorted
other junk. They operate the stand at North Rocks right
next to the chicken shop every Sunday.
The Pioneer A06 drives are, AFAICS, genuine Pioneer
product, but you've gotta understand that your only
form of support will be from a dodgy little Chinese
takeaway company, and not the manufacturer's representative
in Australia.
Couple of key differences: The Pioneer Australia product
has a physically larger box, includes various authoring
and burning software, cable, and a couple of pieces of
DVD media.
The chinese takeaway (grey market) version has a smaller
box, one CD with a couple of useless author/burn tools
on it, no DVD media, and sometimes not even a cable.
Ultimately, you still get the drive, and all the other
bits and pieces are probably not worth the extra $$$
that the Pioneer Australia import costs. Food for thought
though.
Pioneer Australa have a 'warning' on their web site...
http://tinyurl.com/qu3q
Note also that the grey imports are NOT ILLEGAL under
Australian law. Once upon a time, everything from music
to shavers to computer components were treated as illegal
imports unless the original equipment manufacturer, or
someone authorised by same, was doing the import. People
like Microsoft used to tie up heaps of Australian Customs'
time chasing after people who imported perfectly legitimate
'Microsoft Mice', for example, in parallel to Microsoft's
official imports.
Recent changes to Australia's parallel import laws (remember
when all music CDs suddenly dropped by $10-$15 in price?)
means that parallel imports are now legal, but at the same
time, the 'official' vendor is not usually under any obligation
to provide support for procduct that someone else 'grey'
imported.
