We hope to raise enough money on Saturday to provide some immediate
emergency support to the many young members of the Atem extended
family who still remain in the Kakuma Refugee Camp on Kenya.
Other the last few weeks new influxes of refugees have been pouring
into Kakuma. Although there is some maize-meal rations available,
during our last contact with Kenya, it was reported that there was a
shortage of firewood and so people can't cook the maize to eat it.
Therefore many people in Kakuma had not eaten anything for a number of
days. Additionally, over the weekend armed conflict was actually
taking place in the vicinity of Kakuma causing some members of Adut's
family to have to flee to other parts of the camp.
Background (for those who missed Stateline): Adut, her father Dau and
her adult siblings have been in Canberra for approximately one year.
Adut's mother has recently arrived in Kakuma after being missing for
11 years. We hope she will be able to join the family in the near
future.
With assistance from Marion Le, Adut has been working towards
sponsoring her young cousin Abuk, whom she raised from age 3 to age
13, to join her in Canberra. As well as young Abuk, there were another
12 orphaned cousins who lived with Adut and her brothers in Kakuma,
whom the family also wish to take care of and reunite with.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
· Attend the fundraiser, (view the 10 minute Stateline Clip if you
haven't already) and talk to the family members about the situation
facing not only their family, but thousands of Sudanese families in
Kakuma.
· Those wishing to be more involved, can think about whether they
could assist in any way with a sponsorship group. By working together,
we hope to reunite this large group of "lost children/young people"
with their family guardian, Dau Atem, and his family.
