The story written by the geologist responsible for staking this raw
undeveloped prospect in the remote uninhabited western part of the Great
Sandy Desert, is a modern day prospecting saga more closely resembling the
Klondike and rough and tough Californian gold rushes of the late 1800s. The
mine, when it came on stream in April 1977, was overnight the largest gold
producer in Australia. Even today it ranks second or third behind the
Kalgoorlie superpit and the Boddington open pit near Perth.
