Newcrest soars as Telfer upgraded
By Jane Counsel
Newcrest Mining shares have hit a six-year high after the company revealed a
trebling of gold resources after a major upgrade of its mothballed Telfer
mine.
Announcing a resource of
19 million ounces at Telfer, Newcrest said its total gold resource base was
now about
50 million ounces, placing the company among the top 10 goldminers in the
world.
"In my 20 years in the gold industry, it [Telfer] is the best thing I've
ever seen," Newcrest chief executive Tony Palmer said yesterday.
Investors reacted enthusiastically to the news, pushing Newcrest's share
price up 50c to $5.77, its highest level since early 1996, after the Telfer
resource came in at the higher end of expectations.
Several securities analysts, including those at Credit Suisse First Boston,
believe the Telfer resource could now trigger a doubling of Newcrest's share
price.

A total 26 million ounce resource was defined at Telfer following 140
kilometres of exploratory drilling and using a $450 an ounce gold price
cut-off.
Newcrest said a feasibility study on re-opening the Telfer mine would now be
based upon a project-planning inventory of 19 million ounces of gold and
740,000 tonnes of copper.
Although the resource estimate has to be reconciled with the Joint Ore
Reserve Code, Mr Palmer said it was reasonable to expect the entire 19
million ounce inventory would be translated to a mineable reserve.
"The Telfer mineral resource establishes the Telfer district as the second
largest goldfield in Australia, behind Kalgoorlie, and will further enhance
the Telfer project," he said.
Building on the success at Telfer, Newcrest said it was now re-estimating
its resources and reserve inventory on a $500 per ounce gold price basis,
which it still regarded as a conservative cut-off price.
Newcrest intends to re-commence mining at Telfer through the Telfer deep
underground resource within two years after suspending operations in July
2000 due to rising production costs.
The company is now aiming for a potential $1 billion project which would
account for half its output within three years.
The upgrading of the Telfer resource has been timely news for Newcrest,
whose share price has been dogged by concerns about its gold hedge book and
queries about its management.
Newcrest said it expected to complete its feasibility study of Telfer in the
September quarter
