Too true Radiohead
And they also did the footy with Harry Bietzel, Smokey Dawson, Bobby
Skilton, Tommy (Is that you Harry?) Layiff, and Ricky Barham.
I remember listening to 3AK's 1990 GF coverage with Smokey and Bobby
from the top deck of the Olympic Stand. A great coverage - and a
wonderful result!

Time restraints prevent me from revealing my vision in one go (I'm trying to
build a proposal that's well explained and is convincing), so it might be
interesting to first get some reactions to my opinion.
To get the ball rolling, I reckon the name 3AK needs to be said with
'emphasis'.

Not exactly - but if it's to keep the name "3AK" yes! "Talk 1116"
alone gives them no where to go if they want to change direction down
the track.
But one basic thing they must improve is programming. Last years
lineup was simply so much better than this years.
Justin. This has been - and is - a brilliant thread.
You've stayed on track - and have handled side issues well.
Can you now tell us - in one broad message - what the answer is?
It should be forwarded to Ron Hall and those at Radio Titanic as a
sign of hope - and a positive direction to go in.
May 3AK live ... and go on to better things.
Well done!
Ian
They are scared to move away from the idea they currently want to
work.
The changes they have made maintain their format philosphy yet holds
on to the same problems.
You keep banging on about examining new opportunities in the market,
and finding a niche etc...I agree. But, I'm suggesting they are
sitting in a formatic comfort zone and are uneasy about moving away
from it.

May I comment that this thread is interesting, though tedious, reading
The topic has been explored, carved up, turned over, put back in the
mud, turned over washed and so on and so on
I personallt believe 3AK are a little more together than (say) 2SM,
which is perhaps sitting there in (what appears to be) a holding
pattern (hopefully not losing too much money), while the regional FM
network stations (which are not commonly branded unlike other
networks) roll in the money.
However I think that maybe 2SM - like 3AK - can do better !
so lets deisect this week's instalment:
(1) Too much comment and writing on how to read a thread from front to
back or back to font... 10 lines !
example:
> The purpose of reading this front-to-back will be to get to the heart of
> understanding the critical issues first and then hopefully by reading your
> way back up the thread, a lot of ideas will start to click with you.
And a bit more on the same (non) topic:
> For starters, we have to tip things upside down at this point. We're now
> going to summarise the 'Perception, Differentiation and Consistency' 9-point
> checklist.
And a little personal comment just for good measure...
> Just what the hell has Justin Christie been on about all this time?
Too much "intectualising and re-interpretation", and too many
generalistic "points" such as:
> Dealing with Perception: IS finding your communications tactic
> Dealing with Differentiation: IS turning your tactic into a strategy
> Dealing with Consistency: IS keeping strategy on track, staying focused.
SHIT !
I like to read a good story - but this has gone too far - its that
sl;ow to get to the point - that it makes watching "The Restless
Years" INTERESTING in comparison.
Justin - Please get to the point !
(otherwise I will !)

Justin - I'm looking forward to your final piece.
I agree with alot you've covered but I hope the last piece of the
jigsaw makes everything else fall into place.
These are just random thoughts you may like to consider.
I don't for a moment believe that 3AK selling to Singleton would
automatically improve anything. Remember the Bond days wher 3AK/2UE
were gonna be "The Biggest Sound In Australian Radio". Melbournians
hated the Sydney influence.
I also feel that 3AK was better off headed by Jeff Chatfield - as at
least he'd continually talk the station up in the media. He may not
have been a great boss - but I feel was learning. Who is Ron Hall???
And Southern Cross should not be allowed to vote at DCL board
meetings. It breaches the spirit of the Broadcasing Services Act.
I reckon 3AK would be best served to become somewhat of a nostalgia
talk/entertainment station. Heaps of listeners would fondly remember
the days of the Good Guys when 3AK was No. 1.
Many would also remember the days when it proudly was the radio
appendage of GTV known as "the Voice of Television City".
I'd like to see 3AK again call its on-air staff "the Good Guys" - and
promote them as always accessable. The "Conversation Station" sounds
like a good idea. One thing 3AK CAN do that 3AW and 3LO can't do is
let anyone with something to say on air. They should hammer this
point of advantage - if you want to chat to us we'll always let you
on.
They could even recycle all those wonderful jingles that they had in
the 60s. These were based on "Fif-teen hund-red wond-er-ful 3 A K".
"Elev-en six-teen" would scan anywhere that 1500 did.
Denver's Legends KLZ was successfully using this batch of jingles only
last year. They're happy and snappy - and sound better than most
radio jingles.
If they're momentarily stuck for talkback callers - rather than have
the announcer waffle on about what listeners "might" like to talk
about (which sometimes never eventuates) they should unashamedly say
we're playing music till you - our listeners - tell us what you want
to talk about. After all their music is in stereo and sounds great.
Put in the right announcers (the Good Guys - who'll give you a fair
go) - keep "Victorian Radio Network News" - play music when necessary.
And become "the Conversation Station" where anyone can have their
say. And a morning debate is a great idea - as long as it's not
contrived.
On the announcers ...
Brett de Hoedt should be given breakfast - he achieved its highest
recent ratings and has earned another chance (and an apology!).
Phil Cleary is great value. Also new. Well known. And Independent.
Keep him!
Bernie Finn is a funny poor mans version of Steve Price. Too much
excess Liberal party baggage. Hopefully the next to go.
Greg Evans is the true pro. And Leigh Drew deserves a medal.
I think Doug Aiton should be left at late evening. And maybe Terry
Laidler could be recruited back to drive or early nights.
In short - I think 3AK should be the natural station talkback
listeners should tune to when they are momentarily sick of 3LO and
3AW.
The Conversation/Entertainment station that will always give everyone
a fair go.
