Bali Survivors Call Samudra a Dog
June 23, 2003 11:32 PM,
Laksamana.Net - Two Australian survivors of last year's Bali
nightclub bombings on Monday (23/6/03) directly confronted key suspect Imam
Samudra, calling him a dog and saying he was going to die.
Queensland rugby player Jake Ryan and his brother Mitchell made their
outburst when Samudra began chanting "Allah Akbar [God is great]" while
being led out of court.
"You're a f---ing dog, mate. You're going to f---ing die," Jake Ryan
was quoted as saying by the Herald Sun daily.
Melbourne resident Spike Stewart, whose 29-year-old son Anthony died
in the October 12 bombings, described Samudra as a "mongrel".
Plainclothes officers of the Australian Federal Police led the Ryan
brothers away after their confrontation with the alleged field commander of
the blasts that killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.
Mukhlas Claims he was Tortured
Ali Gufron alias Mukhlas (43), the alleged planner of the Bali
bombings, on Monday withdrew his earlier confession and statements, claiming
he had been tortured by police.
Mukhlas, also the alleged leader of regional terrorist organization
Jemaah Islamiyah, told the court he had been blindfolded, stripped naked and
tortured while in police custody in Jakarta.
He said police subjected him to "brutal and inhuman physical torture"
to force him into confessing his role in the attacks.
Fellow defendants Amrozi and Imam Samudra have made similar claims of
torture but the courts are proceeding with their trials. Police have denied
mistreating any of the extremists.
Mukhlas said police beat him at least 20 times and threatened to send
video footage of his bruised testicles to his wife if he refused to make a
confession. He did not name any of the officers who allegedly beat him.
"I was stripped naked, then I was treated inhumanely in a way which
should not even be done by a mad dog let alone a human being," he was quoted
as saying by Reuters.
"My genitals were played around with. My right testicle was hit by a
wooden object dozens of times until I shrieked in pain," he added.
Mukhlas has reportedly admitted to meeting with al Qaeda leader Osama
bin Laden in 1987. He said police asked him about that meeting during his
interrogation.
"One moron said 'You said you're bin Laden's follower, you said you
want to do jihad and die as a martyr. Show your strength. It's only your
balls which were hit so don't cry like a woman'," he was quoted as saying by
Reuters.
Indonesian security forces are notorious for beating up suspects to
force confessions out them. Real-life crime shows on local television
networks often show bruised and bleeding suspects. Sometimes police are even
shown hitting alleged petty criminals and drug dealers.
