After watching the Carlton v Melbourne game, I noticed a few simalarities
with the Freo v Brisbane match with the flooding.
1) Carlton and Brisbane were being defensive, trying to stop opponents
scoring rather than trying to score.
2) the "flood" was the tactic used to be ultra defensive.
3) both Freo and Melbourne had the wind in the 4th quarter.
What struck me most was that the team behind on score (Melb, Freo) were
stronger in the mid-feild, and were able to pepper away at the goals. The
flood didn't seem to work because (Melb, Freo) were able to lock the ball in
their forward 50 on a kick-out because of maning up and the ability these
days of forwards working as hard as defenders. With the kick-out, there
weren't many options other than to kick to a pack.
As long as forwards were able to blast away at goals, or even defenders,
then the team fighting the flood had the edge.
Perhaps the era of the flood is nearly over. Thank budha if it is so.
