Dragons pair face judiciary charges
Monday 7 July 2003, 4:30 PM
St George Illawarra pair Brent Kite and Michael Howell have been charged by
the National Rugby League judiciary following an incident involving Brisbane
utility Casey McGuire on the weekend.
Kite was charged with a grade two careless high tackle and fellow
interchange forward Howell a grade two striking charge in the wake of the
Dragons' 32-16 victory over the Broncos at WIN Stadium on Friday night.
Kite struck McGuire high in a 58th minute tackle before Howell landed on the
head of the utility after the tackle was completed.
Unless Howell successfully fights the charge he will miss his team's
encounter with third-placed Canberra at Oki Jubilee Stadium on Sunday.
Kite can make himself available for that match by entering an early guilty
plea.
New Zealand Warriors Awen Guttenbeil will be free to play against Manly at
Ericsson Stadium on Saturday night if he enters an early guilty plea to a
grade two careless high tackle charge.
Guttenbeil went high on North Queensland five-eighth David Myles in the 19th
minute of his side's 30-10 loss in Townsville on Saturday night.
Cronulla utility Michael Sullivan will miss Sunday's clash with Wests Tigers
at Leichhardt Oval after the club indicated he would take an early guilty
plea to a grade one careless high tackle.
Sharks general manager Steve Rogers said the club would accept the early
plea on behalf of Sullivan, who has 93 carry-over points from a previous
offence.
The 23-year-old was named on the charge sheet following a tackle on
Penrith's Joel Clinton in Cronulla's 20-0 loss at Toyota Park on Saturday
night.
The Bulldogs may lose hooker Corey Hughes for Friday night's blockbuster
against Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium after he was charged with a grade one
dangerous throw on Newcastle rake Danny Buderus.
Hughes will cop a one-week suspension if he chooses not to contest the
charge.
