I adopted Wanda a few weeks ago from SPCA Town Lake and much to my dismay
and sadness- she just isnt an apartment dog. She is a 5 month old Bassett
Hound mix. 32lbs, fixed female. She has had all her first round of shots.
She also has been embedded with a microchip you can register if she is ever
lost.
This dog is HOUSE/YARD dog. She cannot live in an apartment. She is very
friendly and submissive. We are working on house breaking- walks great on a
leash. Wanda needs either a household with someone home during the day, kids
or other dogs. She wants attention that I was unable to give (though I'd
love to quit my job to stay home with her!!)
Anyway, I love this dog and will be selective of interested persons. Please
respond if you are interested. I have tons of pictures!
Thank you!

take her back to Town Lake...how sad that you didn't think things through
before you took her...and not very sensible of them to give her to you w/o
making a better match...
another benefit of getting a dog through a rescue group is the ability to
visit w/ the dog for long periods before making up one's mind, a full and
honest report on the dog's behaviors, etc. and suitability for the
environment you can provide...

Unfortunately Town Lake doesn't do much in the way of interviewing people.
They also won't allow anyone to interact with a dog in the evaluation
section.:(
Only the adoption section which I also don't really agree with.
As for the OP it isn't going to be all that easy to place her and you
*did* sign a contract that states you must bring her back to them
if you can't keep her. Read the contract. One thing you may
consider is "Doggie Daycare". There are several locations in
town that have this service. And have you had her in Puppy Basics yet?
Or any obedience type of classes? This of course is basically mandatory.
One thing I really have issue with Town Lake and others is that
they do not make it a mandatory option for those adopting
dogs to have to take them to at least one Obedience class
with a graduation certificate.

I was very selective and took alot of time to select this dog. However, I
was told she was good for an apartment and also good alone for 6 hrs. She is
neither. I will NOT take her back to the shelter. I will place her in a home
with someone who will love her as much as I do. As a responsible pet owner,
that is my duty. It's very easy for people to say 'you should've, could've,
would've' but try being in my situation and then you can talk.
Thanks for all your concerns.

You did sign the contract right? You need to
go back and read it. It states that you can
not rehome the dog, that if in the event
you can not keep her you must return
her to Town Lake. I ought to know
I own one and one in which I would have
rehomed if I could as she does not has
not and never will fit in well with my family
my other dog etc. But since I signed that
contract and I am unwilling to take her
back to that place she is mine. And this
is three years later. Many trainers including
agility etc.

DO NOT RETURN THE DOG TO TLAC!!!!!!
If you can find a good home she has a chance, TLAC will probably end up
killing her, they place very few dogs compared to killing them...

This is very typical with TLAC, they have little info to help you choose
in most cases and they have a HIGH return rate. Glad you are going to
place her and not just dump her on TLAC again...

Yep and often the dogs are returned in horrible conditions.
It still doesn't negate the fact that a *contract* was signed.
While I doubt they would do much the dog was in fact microchipped
and is on record with that number.
I agree that it wouldn't be grand to return the dog. Which of course
is why I still have a dog that no one in the family likes and she
doesn't fit well with my other dog either. But she isn't going
back to that hell hole for any reason no matter how terrible
of a match she is for our family.

Gee....Why would an animal shelter want an animal back because an adoption
didn't work out? Hmmm.....who knows how much money they have brought into
the shelter by making people bring their adopted pets back if the situation
doesn't work out????? Doesn't it seem funny that the best interest of the
animal comes in second behind the almighty dollar at an animal shelter?
Please don't lecture me on the lack of funding, blah, blah blah.... I would
think that once the money was paid for an animal, that should be that.

TLAC feels they can better place the dog than Joe Average is the only
reason. They are not doing well money wise, no nefarious scam there.
The $75 covers, checkup & treatment if needed, spay/nueter and microchip.
Ask a vet to do that for $75, the rest is our tax money.

Whether you like it or not, gun rights are civil rights. If you are
against gun rights, then you are in the same pack as the Klan and the
communists, and are as likely to vote to shut down churches and
newspapers as you are to license and register guns.
First off, there is this thing called a 'Green List'. This is a list that is
sent around to various rescue shelters. If none of them are able to take the
dog, it is put down. Wanda was on this list.
Secondly, I would NEVER take her back to the TLAC. They offer a great
service, they take in dogs, spay and neuter them, give them their shots.
However, these dogs sit out in the heat, a lot of time in their own feces.
She will never go back there, contract or no contract.
I have a few interested people in Wanda and she WILL get a good home, with a
big yard. There is no doubt about that.

Indeed and some of the time they can. Obviously they do all these
checks that Joe Average typically will not do. Of course
the OP of this sounds very sincere about wanting to find a good
home. It sounds like they are willing to do checks and interviews.
I just hope they consider a home check, a call to the Vet mandatory.
