Anyone see the article in the AAS biz section today that listed Seattle,
Phoenix and Denver as "peers" of Austin? BWA HA HA HA HA, whew. Yeah, sure,
maybe if you've never been out of Travis County.
Seattle, Phoenix and Denver are all REAL cities. Austin is not anywhere
close to being a real city. Even Raleigh-Durham, which the article also
listed as a peer, is far more advanced in almost every possible civic
measure than Austin, though it's one heckuva lot closer to being a peer than
the others.
Man, what a bunch of stupid, provincial, self deluding, rah-rah dipwads. And
the city, the AAS and the idiots at the CoC wonders why the Heavy Hitters
from elsewhere snicker behind their backs. Amazing.
Cheers,
Dusty

I travel to Raleigh-Durham regularly and they don't have near the live
music/nightlife that we've got here. Their freeways suck too.
Last time I was there I was reading about how the city of Durham is
trying to get rid of their city manager -- who used to be an asst.
city manager or something of the sort here.
Haven't been to Phoenix or Seattle. One's dry, one's wet as far as I
know.
Just curious Dusty. If Austin's so god-awful, why are you still here?
Certainly, with those bad knees, a town with better mass transit would
be suited to you ...

Well, excepting for the fact that your original post was short on

If he has such bad knees, how long can he possibly stand on his Segway?

Oh, I can stand just fine. I can walk fine, too. But I have only so many
steps left on these knees and it's likely to be at least a decade until I'm
a candidate for bilateral replacement. The Segway allows me to extend my
range, so to speak.

I know I'm going to regret asking this, but, ummm....just what is your
definition of a "real" city, Dusty? So far as I can tell, the only
real difference (aside from purely subjective likes and dislikes, such
as weather) between Austin and the three other cities cited is size.
Austin has everything those three other cities have, except on a
smaller scale. Your comments seem kinda like your SO complaining that
you aren't a "real" man because of your tiny dink. And, while I
don't share your inadequate size problem, I think its only a matter
of common sense that size alone does not make the man....nor the city.

I can't speak for Denver since I haven't been there, except for the airport,
in about 7 years but Phoenix has several significant advantages over Austin.
First, much lower property taxes. Second, it's a much cleaner city as far a
trash scattered around the landscape is concerned. Third, the roads are
about 1000% better in Phoenix/Valley. They're smooth, wide, pretty (well
landscaped) and, very well planned (in advance too).

And they have REALLY BIG street signs so the octogenarians can find their

I'll go with this. Typically AAS boosterism. Been happening since
forever.

Depends on one's criteria, dudn't it? Austin is a cool college town
borged to a high tech labor cube. Does that make it a "real city"?
Probably so. Does that make it a GREAT city? Definitely not.

Kinda reinforces my take that a small city grew into a large one without
the amenities...

Yes, I have been to and driven around
Phoenix/Tempe/Chandler/Gilbert/Scottsdale recently, my wife is from there
and her family still lives there - we visit several times a year.. Sure
there are small pockets of rundown dirty places but Austin, to me, seems
much more unkempt, especially downtown, North Austin and East Austin. I
don't find Phoenix traffic that bad...it's a bigger city after all. Yes, the
freeways are congested but secondary roads are very open and freeflowing on
the whole - even during rush hours. As for everything being brown. Have you
been there lately? With all of the Midwesterners living/moving there, the
place is green, green, green. Everyone has to have a green yard and
non-native shade trees (which I disagree with vehemently). I for one don't
mind the heat, except during monsoon season when there is heat AND humidity.
With that all being said, I like Austin too...if I were given my choice I'd
have to go with Phoenix - Paradise Valley specifically.
