If Hitler had felt that victory over Britain was such a foregone conclusion;
why did he make several attempts at political settlements to end
hostilities? Had Britain accepted terms Hitler would have had access to
bases from where he could have struck the USA. Just as the Vichy French
collaboration allowed him to use French bases. Indeed the Japanese where
allowed, by the collaborating Vichy whom you so admire, to use French
colonies as bases in their attack on Pearl Harbor. The fact that Britain
stood firm and won the Battle of Britain helped save your worthless arse,
Hammond.
Hitler attempted to establish German control of the skies over England in an
attempt to either forcing Britain to the peace table or, if that was not
possible, prepare the way for invasion. Goring, someone you have much in
common with, assured Hitler that his Luftwaffe could defeat the RAF and thus
deny the Royal Navy air support. This was crucial if a German invasion was
to succeed.
The Battle of Britain opened in July 1940, while a German invasion fleet was
prepared, with the Luftwaffe attempting to draw out the RAF by attacking
Channel ports and shipping. Goring hoped to provoke the RAF into a decisive
engagement but the RAF didn't fall for it. A major error of the Luftwaffe
was the failure to destroy the British RADAR. The RAF initially did indeed
face heavy losses that outstripped production of replacements but this was
corrected by Lord Beaverbrook. Indeed this reporting of numbers lost etc
actually was used to effect. It caused the Luftwaffe to make a seriously
fatal misinterpretation of the state of the battle. Goring's arithmetic
showed that the RAF was virtually beaten and thus he was able to convince
Hitler of this. In fact, although Dowding had run out of reserves and his
pilots exhausted, he still had more than 700 aircraft available. With the
invasion fleet on standby, the German Navy had asked for 10 days notice of
Sealion, 300 bombers and 600 escorting fighters raided London on the 7th
September. This was expected to force Dowding to send up his the few
aircraft Goring believed the RAF had left. Day and Night attacks on London
over the next week seemed to confirm Goring in his belief that the RAF were
all but finished and collapse imminent. Hitler brought forward the date of
invasion to 17th September but the relaxation of pressure on the RAF's
airfields and production centres at this crucial moment enabled it to regain
its vigour. This was revealed to the Luftwaffe, on the 15th September, when
they experienced heavy losses on bombing raids. This caused German airman to
voice doubts that they could after all remove the threat of the RAF. This
meant that the Royal Navy would have the air cover to threaten the approach
of any invasion fleet, 12% of which had already been destroyed by RAF
bombing. On 17th Sept Hitler postponed the invasion indefinitely. From there
on German daylight operations began to tail off. They still flew sorties
against aircraft factories but the medium bombers where directed towards
British cities at night in an attempt to break civilian moral. Contrary to
pre-war theories, British society showed few signs of disintegrating under
the onslaught. The Blitz failed to seriously disrupt British industrial
production, port operations or internal communications.
When the Battle of Britain had finished and daylight battles virtually
ceased at the end of October the Luftwaffe had lost about 1,800 aircraft and
over 2,500 aircrew since July. The RAF figures were 1,100 aircraft lost and
550 pilots killed.Victory for the Luftwaffe would have led to the invasion
of Britain. The RAF had denied Hitler the air superiority they needed and
had created the conditions for Britain's survival, for its continuation in
the war and for the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany.
Hitler famously stated that he would succeed where Napoloeon had failed and
stand on the shores of a defeated England. He failed to do so. Britain could
have accepted terms just as the Vichy Fench did. We didn't accept terms
instead we fought and we won. Deal with it, Hammond.

I have an extensive collection of books on the subject, some authored by

Was the Battle of Britain a close run thing? Yes. Did Britain seek help in
way of credit, materials etc? Yes. Where we intensely grateful for said
help? Indeed we were.Where we lucky that the opposition made mistakes? Yes.
It was War and these things happen during war. Did this mean that Britain
lost? The answer is no. After all; Washington had to do the same in the
Revolution. In his War to remove George 111 he looked to the absolute
monarchy of France for men, arms and credit. That was also a close run war.
If we use Hammonds flawed logic and say that Britain lost the Battle of
Britain then, applying the same flawed logic, Washington lost.
