Like others, my Opera (v. 7.11 on Windows XP) took a long time to open
(about 20 seconds). I tried all the fixes that were suggested in other
posts, but nothing worked. I just figured out what it was, so I
thought I'd post what worked for me in case it will help others. I had
to delete the following file:
C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Application
Data\Opera\Opera7\profile\cache4\dcache4.url
This got my Opera to start loading within three seconds. Empting the
cache for some reason did not delete this file. So there ya go.

MS used URL extensions for seom it's own purposes.
I think there os nothing to do, but changing it.
Did You heard about Firbird/Yaffil/Interbase ?
All of them originated from Groton DataBase and uses GDB extension to hold
their data.
But in XP Ms decided to use GDB for it's own purposes and now when server
opens a database, Windows back's it up before allowing server to access it.
Firebird already changed extension to FDB. :-)
PS: i use w2k so i just heard about it. there was also a tweak,
de-registering GDB from MS extensions, hence making SFP ignore it.
I guess if this is also SystemFileProtection-related issue, then You can try
to find some clue's for tining it and releasing URL-files.
But if it is some IE/indexing/whatever issue - i do not know.
PPS: get filemon from www.WinInternals.com and set filter onto "dcache4.url"
Then launch Opera.
I wonder - what processes but Opera try to access this file ?

If i had ears, i'd heard none: WinAMP de-instaled.

Before speculating that way, you might try filemon yourself and have a
close look. Or you simply try opening the file in any texteditor...

Thanks a lot, this was the needed solution!! And the described bug opera
not emptying the cachefile seems to be fixed in forthcoming 7.2.

My dcache4.url is 406 kb, but Opera loads rather fast (10 second).
Cache set to 20Mb
So what should i see there ?

Reading your former post again and again, I seem to have misunderstood you.
You meant, maybe some other process blocked cache4.url. I understood:
'What's this file got to do with it?' So please accept my appologies.
On my W2K - system startup - time was increased from about 20 seconds to
less than 5 this way. Cache4.url was about one MB.

Ok, after reading "I tried all the fixes that were suggested" i began to
think about rumours that may affect the case and were out of area of
interest among this ng readers.
So my advice indeed has very little chance to be the hit.
Ok, personally i will keep my dcache. I gave 20Mb to chache not to just
dismiss it :-)
