I have been using Opera for a few years now and love the functions and
the way I can customize everything.
After a pc meltdown recently, I had to reinstall everything from
scratch. While I had a backup of my bookmarks, I am wondering whether
it's possible to save the overall configuration of your opera screen
(sorry, I am not that technical). What I mean is the way where my tool
bars are located, which items are in the personal bar, what skin I
prefer, how I want my pages to open etc. In short, all the stuff you
can configure under preferences.
Is there any profile or similar that is stored somewhere containing
that info for an easy backup?
Kind Regards
Tom

In Opera 7 for Windows, if you have done a multi-user install, you find all
necessary information (at least as far as it is configurable through the
GUI) in your Application Data\Opera\Opera7\profile dir. The Application
Data directory is under C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\ if you
use XP; I don't remember right now where it is under Win9x/ME.

>>Thanks Thomas,
I found the file in W98 under Windows/ApplData/opera/opera7/profile.
There are three files there are three files containing config settings
(ad pref, opera 6 and search) and various other files like
cookies.dat, global.dat, wand.dat.
In some cases I can guess what they do (wand) but in others I am not
sure. What is behind global.dat?
Which files should I really backup and if necessary transfer into a
new installation?
Kind Regards

<URL: http://www.opera.com/docs/operafiles/> describes most Opera files
fairly thoroughly. It's a little out of date, apparently written for
Opera 5.x and updated for Opera 6.x. It does not mention the profile
locations, as that is new for Opera 7.x. Subdirectories of the profile
directory contain any edited keyboard, menu, mouse, or toolbar
configuration files, you'll probably want to preserve those, too.
<URL: http://www.opera.com/support/search/supsearch.dml?index=313> gives
specific recommendations about which files are important to back up.
