I don't know which teachers you're talking about: Portland teachers are
enjoying a 10% pay CUT.

As for the Portland teachers, get rid of some administrators and I'm sure
some more money will free up.

I'd have to agree. The admin to teacher ratio is at least 100 to 1.
Cutting back on admin would be a drop in the bucket. They've looked at it
already.

Have you factored in their health benefit package and PERS
contribution before arriving at that conclusion?

Maybe if the school districts stopped spending the money re-astro-turfing
the fields and buying a laptop lab for the class or deciding to use gigabit
ethernet between the districts they could afford to stop bitching about
losing money.

How don't see how the fact that Oregon spends 14% more per pupil than the
national average, $1000 per pupil more than California and $700 more per
pupil than the state of Washington and still not have enough money.
IT'S A SPENDING PROBLEM! NOT A REVENUE PROBLEM!

Your raw numbers (if indeed they are true - you've not supported them),
don't necessarily tell you the story you need to know. I could think of two
factors that -could- increase expenses in Oregon over the average -
transportation costs in rural parts of the state, and Special Education
costs.
Instead of just repeating tired canards, how about coming to the discussion
with some actual facts?

What are you talking about? Portland couldn't afford to keep ANY sports
programs going last year. They were going to cut all spring sports until
private donors kept it alive. Laptop labs for a class? Show me where those
are. I sure don't see them wheeling around the halls of inner city schools,
even though it's not a bad idea. Gigabit ethernet? Again a good idea, and
probably well worth the money spent... if such a thing were commonplace in
public schools.
Spending problems vs. revenue problems? Can't you just look at the decline
in spending in portland schools since measure 5 passed 13 years ago and see
the truth?

A pay cut is a pay cut.

Um, are you *sure* about that first figure? Reynolds is not that big,
and I think Benson grads alone would equal the number graduating from
Reynolds in the Portland Public Schools.
Reynolds also has a quiet rep among us wannabe teachers as having
money to spend on teachers.

Yep. Pretty standard these days. My current college class this
session has folks sitting on counters, no way to get a larger room.
