Description:
As an Applications Engineer, you will be developing and managing software for a large, high-volume, image-sharing web site. You have a strong understanding of Internet infrastructure, protocols, and technologies. You are proficient with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, XML, SQL and RDBMS (preferably Oracle), and Linux. You have extensive development experience using a dynamic scripting language such as Perl, Python or PHP. In-depth knowledge and interest in digital photography is highly desired.

You must be a team player motivated by technical challenges and demonstrate superb problem-solving skills. You are able to prioritize work, communicate effectively with members of the development team and complete jobs under tight deadlines. You continually keep abreast of new technologies in the industry and are able to learn and adopt these rapidly.

You understand the development cycle, have experience with implementation and unit testing of software, and require only moderate supervision or mentoring in order to perform your tasks. You are able to logically predict the time required to complete your assigned development tasks, assign tasks to other developers, defend those predictions, and to complete the tasks on time.

Essential job functions include:
- Designing and implementing software modules in accordance with functional specifications with moderate supervision and coaching by senior members of the software staff.
- Assisting in the development of schedules by providing estimates on expected duration of assigned development tasks with coaching by senior members of the software staff.
- Holding and participating in code and design reviews, as well as “brown-bag” education seminars with the development team.
- Producing code in accordance with software engineering best practices and software coding best practices and developing appropriate artifacts (documentation, unit test plans, specifications, and diagrams).
- Performing unit testing of software modules and assisting QA in developing system test plans.

Required skills:
- BS in Computer Science or equivalent. - Minimum 6 years of commercial server-side development experience using a dynamic scripting language (preferably Perl, Python or PHP). In lieu of degree, must have 14 years related experience.
- Experience implementing scalable server-side web-based applications. - Extensive knowledge of UNIX/Linux and Windows environments - Proficient with relational database design and implementing database-connected applications.
- Strong object-oriented design skills; practical experience with design patterns. - In-depth understanding of standard Internet infrastructure, protocols,
and technologies - Experience in implementing dynamic client-side applications using JavaScript and DHTML.
- Good documentation skills - Energetic, inspired, dedicated, passionate about software development.
- Ability and willingness to learn new material quickly and with little top down management - Good communication and personal skills: ability to interact and work well with members of other functional groups in a project team.
- Attentive to detail - Desire and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, growing, dynamic environment. - Interest in digital photography a plus.
