I noted that the eversoft editor mentioned in the last comment doesn't support php highlighting (which is handy to show you which part of your php does what, e.g., which parts are "comments" and aren't supposed to do anything, which are functions, etc). HTML-Kit does highlight php, has some special php plugins avaliable, and is free for non-commercial use; HTML-kit is at http://www.chami.com/html-kit/. There are also other php editors free for non-commercial use, but the site linked on the next page re. editors doesn't seem to be maintained any more. I've found HTML-kit to be very good for newbies.
